What To Expect
What a personal trainter will do for you:
When you work with me...
You will complete a medical and exercise history form initially. If you have any health conditions that are of concern, you will be referred to a health professional. If your health is basically good, and there are no major impediments to exercise, your program can begin.
I typically start by taking your basic body measurements which include your height, weight, hip girth, and waist girth. Some people also want measurements of their upper arms and upper thighs. This just provides a baseline so you can have a measure of your progress. I do not encourage obsessing about the numbers on the scale.
I also like to take your resting heart rate.
I then have you undergo a sit and reach test to measure basic flexibility, curl-up test to measure abdominal strength, push-up test to measure upper body strength, and a mile walk/run test to measure
cardiovascular fitness. Then we’re ready to rock ‘n roll!
Don’t let the “tests” discourage you. One of my “students” was an 80-year old woman who had a history of knee pain and an old shoulder surgery. I had to modify the tests a bit, but this woman did them. After 4 weeks of regular exercise, she improved in every area. She noticed that her knees didn’t bother her quite so much, and her range of motion in all of her joints had increased. She also went down a whole dress size!
Together we will determine your strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes, and come up with a program that fits your schedule and helps you achieve your goals.
Make no mistake. This is going to be work, but it will also be fun. I put the “F” in fun!
